The chairman of Alternattiva Demokratika Harry Vassallo said the Maltese people must ensure their children take part in sports events held by local councils as sport plays a very important part in character formation.

Dr Vassallo said it would make sense for the local councils to invest in facilities that cater for the needs of people who practise the less common sports. He deplored what he termed as the national obsession of converting all open spaces into building sites to the detriment of outdoor activities. A case in point is the building of the school hall for the Safi primary school that was constructed on an open space adjacent to the school rather than on the existent school premises, he said.

Dr Vassallo presented commemorative medals to the participants in a mini-football tournament for children, organised in Safi by AD.
