If Mr Joseph Abdilla wishes to stop junk mail from being posted in his letter-box (The Sunday Times, February 25), he can inform the sender that he does not wish to receive this mail. The sender's e-mail address is often on the junk mail or else it can be easily found on Internet.
If the sender persists in sending unwanted mail, he/she may be reported for harassment to the police and to the Consumer Protection Department. I was told by a junk mail sender that he cannot make exceptions in the same street. He will make exceptions after learning that he is breaking the law.
As to electronic junk mail, this is also illegal. Many senders think that they can anonymously send you, or put on a blog, annoying material. I have information from serious people in this field that this anonymity in this case is an illusion. Many progressive governments are now studying and putting into practice measures of controlling these habits. It will even become possible in Malta.
One sender of junk electronic mail, when traced, told me that he cannot control this as he just presses a button and the junk mail goes off to thousands of people. Pressing a button irresponsibly may get you into a lot of trouble!
