An important international qualification from the UK's National Examining Board in Occupational Safety and Health is now being offered in Malta through the Institute of Health and Safety.

It is ideal for anyone that has health and safety as a part of their job, or as a foundation for higher level study of the subject. Many employers are arranging for at least one person in every work area within their company to be NEBOSH qualified because this gives them confidence that appropriate workplace standards are being applied and monitored.

The 87-hour course covers 26 sessions, held on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and another two sessions for a theory and practice exam. Sessions will take place on April 13, 14, 20 and 21; May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26; June 1, 2, 15, 16, 22 and 23; and July 6, 7, 13, 14, 26 and 27.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate has been designed for managers, supervisors, worker representatives and others who require a basic knowledge and understanding of health and safety principles and practices.

Its aims and objections are to provide the basis for a sound, broad introduction to the fundamentals of occupational health and safety.

Contents will include health and safety foundations; setting policy for health and safety; organising for health and safety; promoting a positive health and safety culture; risk assessment; principles of control; movement of people and vehicles hazards and control; manual and mechanical handling hazards and control; work equipment hazards and control; electrical hazards and control; fire hazards and control; chemical and biological health hazards and control; physical and psychological health hazards and control; construction activities hazards and control; investigation, recording and reporting of events; and monitoring, review and audit.

The cost - Lm500 - covers all tuition, text books, notes, refreshments, exam registration, and exam certificate (after passing exams).

Cheques are to be made payable to the Institute of Health and Safety and sent to Martin Court, University Street, Msida.
