International Safety Training Centre (ISTC) of Hal Far has been providing top quality and internationally accredited fire, safety and sea survival training for the multi-national and regional oil and gas industry operating in the Mediterranean and North Africa since 2000.

The training is conducted both at the centre's state-of-the-art training grounds in Hal Far, in its newly-opened subsidiary in Libya, as well as in field camps and remote locations in Libya, Tunisia and equatorial Guinea.

British Gas Tunisia (BGT) currently operate an offshore installation (Miskar) and a gas processing plant (Hannibal) in Sfax and are the main source of energy requirements for the production of electricity for the Tunisian national electricity grid.

BGT is currently in the process of constructing a modern gas processing plant (Hasdrubal). Its design and processes will more than double the current processing capacity, combining the latest production technology with the highest safety and environmental standards.

Construction will involve the work of an assortment of over 2,000 unskilled, skilled and also highly specialised workers and is expected to be completed within the next four years.

Whether at home as well as in its worldwide holdings, the BG Group has adopted and successfully implemented a "Safety First" corporate philosophy which has placed it at the forefront in ensuring the highest levels of safety and health for its workers together with protection and conservation of its operational environment.

This policy makes it mandatory for all personnel from BG Tunisia as well as their outsourced service providers to attend safety induction and training in line with their job responsibilities.

ISTC recently reached a new height when it had the honour of hosting three members of BGT's top management on OPITO accredited offshore survival training and certification.

During his many years in the oil and gas industry, Derek Fisher, president of BGT, together with another two high-ranking officials, have visited and gained first-hand experience of the world's leading training centres.

It was therefore a great satisfaction to learn that Mr Fisher considers the ISTC facilities adequate and suitable for the training and certification of the many hundreds of workers who will shortly be assigned to constructing the new Hasdrubal plant in Sfax, Tunisia.
