Diane Borg set a new national 60m record in yesterday's heats at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

The Starmax sprinter was on the starting blocks of the first of five heats held yesterday morning. Borg crossed the finish line in 7.60 seconds to lower her own previous national mark of 7.71, set in Brunel last month.

Borg placed seventh in her heat which was won by Susanna Kallur, of Sweden, in 7.25 seconds.

Charlene Attard, who holds the outdoor national record of the distance, 7.66, was in action in the fifth heat and the Pembroke runner placed eighth in 7.82 seconds. The heat was won by Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou in 7.26.

In the men's competition Pem-broke's Darren Gilford ran in the first heat and finished seventh with a time of 6.92 seconds... his best of the season. Britain's promising sprinter Craig Pickering won the race in 6.65 seconds.
