The second Malta Squash Open of the season was played recently at the Union Club, Sliema.
These tournaments are becoming increasingly popular and it is very encouraging to notice that there are new players taking part, a Malta Squash statement said.
As usual, there was an 'A' event for elite players and a 'B' competition for those less experienced and the beginners.
On his way to meeting Mark Lupi in the final of the 'A' event, Ivan Balzan eliminated Anthony Schembri, Nigel Dunkerley and Roberta Pace Grima. He was eventually stopped in his tracks by Lupi who showed he still has what it takes to be ranked among the top players in the country.
The final was not one-sided though and Lupi had to really dig deep when he was faced with some excellent shots from Balzan.
Two relatively new players - Carl Camilleri and Robert Sultana - contested the 'B' final.
Camilleri ousted Mark Seychell, who will soon be playing in his first international tournament in Vienna, and Mark Wright to book a place in the final. Sultana saw off his three opponents with relative ease.
The final was a fiercely-fought match, with Sultana winning the title and proving he deserves to be among the 'A' event contenders in the next tournament.
Ivan Balzan organised the Open. The next one will be played on March 24 at Cynergi by Reebok. More details are available from www.maltasquash.com.
