Readers may recall the cancellation of a ceremony to inaugurate bronze statues of Pope Pius IX and Pope John Paul II in front of the Gozo Cathedral, in Victoria, last July after the statues were placed on the parvis without the necessary Mepa permits.

The cathedral authorities had applied to regularise the situation but the application was turned down in December.

The statues are still standing where they were originally placed over seven months later.

Last July, a Mepa enforcement notice was slapped on the statues, made in Naples on a model by Alfred Camilleri Cauchi and each costing Lm10,000.

When contacted, a Mepa spokesman said the cathedral authorities have re-applied for a reconsideration of the refusal.

The statues were commissioned as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Leone Philharmonic Society's donation of the statue of St Mary to the cathedral.
