Men are slightly more interested in promotions than women and have a higher level of decision-making power, a survey carried out by the National Statistics Office and the National Council of Women shows.

In fact, the survey reveals that 54 per cent of women and 58 per cent of men are interested in a promotion.

On the other hand, more women than men admitted to not being interested in a promotion at work.

The survey was carried out among a sample of 1,432 over 18-year-olds. Half of the respondents were gainfully occupied and 51 per cent of the respondents were women.

More men than women want a promotion to earn more money, while more women want to be promoted because of job satisfaction. Slightly more men also believed they had a chance of getting a promotion.

More than 18 per cent of women reported a very low level of decision-making power and just over 34 per cent of men said their level of decision-maker power was high, as opposed to 28 per cent of women.

Gender is not considered an issue when it comes to the next President, 75 per cent of respondents believe. Slightly more men than women believed this, although more women - 20 per cent - preferred a female as the country's next President.

Council vice-president Grace Attard said the findings were crucial to the formulation of focused strategies aimed at increasing the participation rates of women in decision-making positions.

"The role in education in addressing stereotype attitudes is one of the key areas that require particular attention," she said.

Ms Attard said the results of the study would be discussed during a conference to be held later on this year.
