The British Council in Malta is having a vintage season. And after the recent visit of Steven Berkoff to The Manoel Theatre it threatens to be arguably their best ever.

After Berkoff what? Well during March they will have two very attractive events. The novelist Louis de Berniéres will be here, plus the Irish actor Aidan Dooley. In his one-man-show Tom Crean "Antarctic Explorer" Mr Dooley will interpret the Irish Antarctic explorer and the only man to serve with Scott and Shackleton on three famous expeditions. The actor explained the genesis of his performance: "In Greenwich in 2000 they were having a big exhibition and they wanted a character from the Antarctic expeditions. They wanted an ordinary person, because the British are not really all that happy with those upper class characters, like Scott and Shackleton, who were a bit aloof. And so the idea of basing the story on this Irish sailor who was with them came about."

In the past seven years he has performed his show all over the UK and picked up a prestigious award at The Edinburgh Festival. And now he's bringing it to Malta, to the theatre-in-the-round at St James to be precise. Tom Crean "Antarctic Explorer" will play on March 30 and 31 at 8 p.m. Tickets can be obtained from the St James Booking Office.

One of our most talented and versatile performers Mario Micallef will return to the theatre-in-the-round at St James this month. And, once again, he will be playing multiple characters in the Talenti production of L'Imfietah, which has been penned by Mr Micallef himself and Zep Camilleri, who also directs. L'Imfietah will play at St James between March 9 and 11 and again from March 16 to 18.

In the exhibition halls there are two ongoing showings during March. In the Main Gallery downstairs, Open Verse the exhibition of paintings by Trevor Borg continues until March 26. Then upstairs the important exhibition of Chinese fans and umbrellas will be on show until March 22. There will also be an exhibition by the well-known English artist Graham Woodall at the arts centre towards the end of the month.

Musically, the popular lunchtime concerts continue around the corner at St Catherine's on Sundays and Thursdays throughout the month. This month's Intimate Letters evening will be held at the Auberge d'Italie and the composer under surveillance will be the Czech composer Leos Janacek. In the Music Room at the centre there will be a number of concerts and recitals during March.

On March 9 the French Embassy will present a violin and piano concert featuring Celimeme Daudet (piano) and Melanie Clapies (violin). They will play music by Mozart, Ravel, Debussy and Enesco. Then one day later on March 10 the Maltese - Polish Friendship Society will present a concert by two distinguished Polish musicians. The soloists will be Mieczslaw Slezer (violin) and Danuta Mroczek (piano and harpsichord) and they will play works by Bach, Mozart and the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski.

Other events at St James this month include a lecture by Dr Clare Thake Vassallo on March 8, under the auspices of the British Cultural Association and entitled: Malta and Memory: WWII in the Novels of Pynchon, Monsarrat, Burgess and Rinaldi. The lecture commences at 6.30 p.m. and entrance is free.

Then right at the end of March, on the 31st, there will be another seminar in the series being organised by the Valletta Cultural Forum. This month the topic is: Arts, Heritage and Tourism.

All this and a visit from Louis de Berniéres, things at the St James Arts Centre really couldn't possibly be busier this month.
