French Bursaries

The French Embassy is offering a number of bursaries in the French language for summer 2007.

The offered bursaries are: intensive courses in pedagogical techniques for teachers of French (or future teachers of French); French language intensive courses for students specialising in the language or for professionals (or future professionals) requiring a good knowledge of French for their work.

All bursaries are of a one month duration and travel expenses are not included. Application forms are available from the website of the French Embassy: http://www. ambafrance-mt.org, or may be collected from the French Embassy (130, Melita Street, Valletta) or from the Alliance Francaise de Malte (108, St Thomas Street, Floriana).

Interested candidates should complete the application form (in duplicate) and send it to the embassy by not later than April 2.

Lecture On Glormu Cassar

Roger Vella Bonavita will deliver a lecture entitled The Genius Of Glormu Cassar As A Military Engineer, at Heritage Malta's head office in Merchants Street, Valletta on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m.

Cassar is known as the architect of various baroque buildings particularly in Valletta.

Prof. Vella Bonavita will show various designs depicting Cassar's vision for the entrance to Valletta, as the public debate continues over what Valletta gate should look like.

Prof. Vella Bonavita, a former University of Malta lecturer and project manager for various organisations, is carrying out historical research on the papers of Francesco Laparelli da Cortona as part of his doctoral thesis with the University of Malta.

Admission to the lecture is free.

The Village Bus Suspended

The temporary route bus number 164 to The Village will be suspended from tomorrow until further notice.

The Malta Transport Authority is looking into the possibility of extending existing services to cater for the needs of the area's residents.

Music Finals

The finals of the National Council of Women's Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition will take place at the Sala Isouard, Manoel Theatre, on March 10 at 6.30 p.m.

Spanish Music Discussion

Joyce Guillaumier will discuss "Foreign Composers Influenced by Spanish Music" at the premises of the Centro Cultural Hispano-Maltes in Mikiel Anton Vassallo Street, Valletta tomorrow at 6.30 p.m.

It has been said that some Spanish music was composed by outsiders who were influenced by the music and artistic heritage of Spain.

Notable examples are Glinka, Balakirev, Rimsky-korsakov, Debussy, Bizet, and Ravel who were influenced by the Spanish language and used it to good effect in their works.

Car Wash

A car wash in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be held at the Villa Rosa Car Park, next to Bay Street on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cultural Outing

The St Paul's Bay local council will take residents on a cultural outing to Vittoriosa on Tuesday. The group will visit Fort St Angelo and its chapel as well as the Notre Dame Gate.

Departure from various pick-up points in the locality is at 8 p.m. Booking and further details may be obtained from the local council during normal office hours or from the notice boards in the locality. The price for residents, including a coffee break, is Lm2.75.

Bingo Night

The Fireworks Group of the Sacro Cuor parish church, in Sliema, will hold a bingo night at the Sliema Philharmonic Society on Monday starting at 7 p.m.

The price is Lm1. Food and drink is included.
