Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said yesterday he was confident he would win an upcoming confidence vote that will allow him to remain in power, following a speech to the Senate.

Asked whether he believed he would win today's vote, Mr Prodi said: "Yes. It seemed to me (the speech had) a warm reception. We'll see tomorrow."
