Malta Shipyards Ltd yesterday filed a judicial protest accusing a supplier of providing it with industrial jointing sheets that contained asbestos.

Malta Shipyards filed the protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court against Inter-Power Limited and its representatives Edward and Keith Micallef St John.

Following a call for tenders, Malta Shipyards had purchased several supplies of jointing sheets from Inter-Power. The sheets were imported from the Czech Republic and the UK and were for industrial use.

According to the specifications, the jointing sheets were to be asbestos-free. However, when tested, the Malta Shipyards found that the sheets contained traces of asbestos. This was in breach of the agreement between Malta Shipyards and Inter-Power.

Malta Shipyards called on the company to provide all the documents of purchase and certification of the jointing sheets and of the company from where they had been purchased and held the company liable in damages.

Lawyer Pawlu Lia signed the protest.
