Gilbert Agius will see out the final years of his career with Valletta after agreeing a four-year contract with his first and only club.

Discussions between Agius and high-ranking club officials, namely president Charles Camilleri, executive vice-president Paul Spiteri and general secretary Anton Abela, were finalised at a meeting yesterday morning.

The 33-year-old international's current deal was due to expire in June this year but Valletta moved swiftly to open talks with their inspirational captain over an extension to his contract.

News that Agius has committed himself to Valletta until 2011 will delight the City fans who hold their long-serving captain in the highest of esteem.

A string of stellar performances in Valletta's last three league matches surely strengthened Agius's case for a long-term extension to his contract with the club from the capital.

The Malta captain, who is only three matches short of a century of appearances for the national team, was an inspirational figure in Valletta's back-to-back league victories over Birkirkara this month.
