Following the enthusiastic response and positive turnout during last year's open day at the Maghtab Environment Complex, WasteServ Malta is busy organising the second open day on Saturday.

The aim is to give visitors another opportunity to see the ongoing works at these waste management facilities and to gain a better understanding about the management of the waste we all generate. Visitors will be able to catch minibuses at the Maghtab gate every hour from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. and join a one-hour tour.

The site tour is a chance to experience what happens at an engineered landfill and how such a facility is engineered. Visitors will see the progress on the rehabilitation of the old Maghtab landfill, the extraction process of the leachate gases, the development of the new civic amenity site for separated bulky waste, the work-in-progress on the Ghallis engineered landfill and the hazardous waste landfill.

Tours will be conducted by WasteServ representatives who will be available to answer any questions. The Minister of Rural Affairs and the Environment will also be visiting the complex during the day.

"The response to the last open day was so positive that WasteServ is planning to make this a regular event" says WasteServ's communications officer, Daniela Vella. "It is very encouraging to see how the general public is interested to know about such facilities. After all, waste is generated by each and everyone of us and this open day gives Waste-Serv the opportunity to demonstrate to the public that proper management is implemented in the disposal of waste."

WasteServ is currently implementing an EU structural funds project worth over €8.4 million to rehabilitate the closed dumps. Over Lm10 million are also being invested in the Ghallis engineered facility which will incorporate a non-hazardous engineered landfill, hazardous waste storage and treatment facility and a hazardous waste landfill.

To ensure that all safety measures are undertaken, anyone wishing to attend this open day activity is encouraged to book ahead on Freephone 8007-22000 or 2385-8000 or e-mail info@wasteservmalta.com.
