To celebrate the Chinese New Year, the Casino Brasserie at Portomaso has organised an exhibition of 22 paintings by Chinese artist Na Yuan. The collection of oils on canvas depicts the streets and the houses of old Beijing.

The exhibition was opened last Tuesday with a concert by Zhao Xingxia, a young Chinese student living in Malta. A Chinese buffet was prepared for the occasion by the chefs of Sichuan restaurant in St Julian's. The staff of the Casino Bar also prepared cocktails inspired by Chinese tradition.

The Casino Brasserie is not new to organising such events. In December more than 600 guests attended "Spies, Lies and Secrets", a night organised to celebrate James Bond's new movie, Casino Royale. A similar event is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, St Patrick's Day.

Born in 1966 in China, Na Yuan is Vice-Dean of the China International Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Vice-Dean of the Shangdong General Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, director of the External Relationship Department of the International Exchange Association of Chinese Painters and Calligraphers, and an active member of the Shangdong Artist Association.

Na Yuan's favourite techniques are oil on canvas and block print. In 1993 her painting Sleeping Lotus was nominated in the International Exhibition of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy. In 1997 she won the competition held to celebrate the return of Hong Kong to China.

In December 1998 she participated in the exhibition held to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Liu Shaoqi, the former President of China.

Her achievements and unique style, combining Chinese with Western art, made her famous in China and abroad. Na Yuan also organises cultural exchanges and exhibitions, aimed at promoting Chinese artists at home and abroad.

Na Yuan's exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m till 5 a.m. until Tuesday. Entrance is free of charge (proof of ID is required on the first visit; the minimum entrance age is 25 for Maltese and 18 for non-residents).
