Cobbled path at Mistra

Browsing on MEPA's mapserver for possible clues to the Highway One TEN-T proposed approach to Mellieha (Freeport-Cirkewwa) brought another pleasant surprise.

An ancient cobbled stone pathway sweeps across the hairpin bends on the Mistra-Selmun road. This discovery warranted a visit to a spot one drives past every other weekend, never realising what hidden treasures lie there.

Designated by MEPA as a Level 2 protected archaeological feature, the pathway has unfortunately been turned into a prime site for illegal dumping.

On the feast of St Paul the MEPA pollution unit (9921-9991) answered a call for help and swooped, from their base in Kirkop, on the environmental criminals with an air of dedication that was refreshing.

It did take them a while to get there. Fortunately a passing police officer from Mellieha also gave assistance and challenged the dumpers of building debris.
