An impressive variety of high quality arts and crafts items were displayed at an exhibition set up by teachers and students of the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce as part of its annual prize day at Palazzo De La Salle, Valletta.

Twenty-two students were awarded prizes and certificates for results obtained in subjects such as art, embroidery, filigree, Malta lace, guitar, pianoforte and violin during the 2005-06 scholastic year.

Society president Paul Asciak thanked all the students and the teachers of the Society for their work and effort to improve the level in various subjects.

During the ceremony, Gozitan embroidery student Marie Louise Bajada presented Mr Asciak with an embroidered emblem of the society.

The emblem, which took Ms Bajada 300 hours to complete, includes gold embroidery threads among others, and is 45 cm square.

Salvina Grech, the student's embroidery teacher at the Society, supervised the work.

Society director Joe Spiteri Staines said they were investing several thousand liri to improve the level of teaching and the classroom environment and equipment.
