At the end of last year, the number of licensed motor vehicles stood at 278,421, the National Statistics Office said.
Of these, 76.1 per cent were private vehicles. Commercial vehicles made up 16.3 per cent.
New licences issued during the fourth quarter of last year amounted to 2,973. Private vehicles accounted for 2,299 new licences, or 77.3 per cent of the total.
Private vehicles falling within class 1 (<1300 cc) registered the highest increase. This class accounted for 1,444 new licences in October-December 2006. Vehicles in class 2 (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 273.
Compared to the third quarter, the total number of newly-licensed new vehicles registered a drop of 456 or 21.6 per cent.
The total number of newly licensed used motor vehicles slipped by one vehicle when compared with the previous quarter.
