Appreciation - Sr Aldegonda Farrugia

Your brother Franky

We were near you when you took your last breath and went to join the Lord, meeting your parents, brothers and sisters who preceded you in His Kingdom.

This not to mention the blessed Dun Gorg Preca whom you had the fortune to care for when it was his turn to leave this vale of tears.

You were born in a family of 12. The senior of the young ones. You were our leader, inviting young neighbours to see your show made of shadows on a piece of bed sheet nailed to the bottom of a disused chair, and this against a payment of just one bead.

At that time there was no electricity, and candles made the shadows move.

You spent a few years in New York with relatives but returned home where you again were the leader of your younger brothers and sisters. However, the Lord had reserved another destiny for you. You followed one of your own sisters joining the Sisters of Charity of St Giovanna Antida where they gave you the unusual name Aldegonda. Your true mission started here, taking care of the sick in hospitals. The authorities who noticed your talents chose you to train those dedicated to the care of the sick.

You trained abroad and came back fully qualified to set up a school for nurses, a post you held successfully to the satisfaction of the authorities and the doctors, until you reached retiring age.

Your former pupils are full of praise for their Sister tutor, Sr Aldegonda. The honours bestowed on you by the civil and university authorities were well merited.

Dear sister, God has finally called you after a long illness, to his flowery kingdom to reward you for all the good you have done on earth. Do remember us.

Appreciation - Sadia Mizzi

Richard Stagno Navarra, Media Officer Referees Board, writes:

A referee has been removed from the active list and has joined those who left before her to join the good Lord in heaven.

Sadia Mizzi, 29, was on the verge of being nominated to the FIFA List of Referees when she was struck by a cruel destructive disease. She would have joined her long-time colleague Esther Farrugia who became an international referee last month.

This was not to be because yesterday this strong young woman was taken away from the football field by the One who created her.

We ask so many times why does He take them so young especially when someone like Sadia epitomized strength.

Her career in the Army and her dedication to refereeing was one circle of physical training and this is why our minds go blank and we dare question the wisdom of Our supreme Lord.

Yet, He knows best and He has certainly prepared vast green pastures for Sadia, very similar to those she used to run on at the football field.

I spoke to Sadia a few weeks ago and she asked me to pray for her so she could put on her referee's uniform.

Now, we will all pray for you as you were our colleague, our friend and the one who many a time said something funny to break up a tense situation.
