The Maltese Sports Council has embarked on the building of a sports complex at Kirkop, next to the new secondary school.
The complex will be open to residents, sports organisations and students from neighbouring villages, Education Minister Louis Galea said yesterday. The council has entrusted the project to the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools.
The complex will have a 200-metre, six-lane track for athletics and a nine-aside pitch with artificial turf.
Several disciplines will be practised including basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, football and athletics. The complex will also have a conference hall, administrative offices, changing rooms and showers.
It is being built on a parcel of land larger than 5,000 square metres - 2,300 squares metres of which will be dedicated to the complex and the rest for landscaping and a car park.
It will also have a 150,000 gallon reservoir to store rainwater.
