£58m splash could still prove futile for West Ham

West Ham spent a staggering £58.2m in the two 2006/07 transfer windows. However, all could prove in vain for them as the troubled London club could still finish being relegated next season.

Clubs like Reading (newcomers) and Manchester City should walk tall knowing that Premiership status is within reach despite filling the bottom two places of the special table for cash spenders in 2006/07.

Chelsea splashed £76.12m of Roman Abramovich's money but earned £42.4m from the selling of players. The champions had a relatively quiet January transfer window but they are still in the running for four major prizes.

Nine of the top ten clubs in the list of spenders last year are again in the top half of the 'cash' classification. Wigan replaced Portsmouth in the list.
