Diane Borg's hopes of being selected for the European Indoor Championships received a massive boost when she broke the national record twice in quick succession in the 60m dash in Belgium on Saturday.

Running in the Brunel University Indoor Grand Prix, Borg first ran a 7.73s in the heats which was good enough for her to reach the final.

In doing so she had already lowered the national record but improved it further when she ran a time of 7.71s in the final to finish second.

The final was won by Jade Johnson, the British long jumper who finished seventh in the 2004 Olympics and won a silver medal in the 2002 European Championships.

The previous national record, that stood at 7.76s, was set by Charlene Attard at last year's World Indoor Championships in Russia.

This latest record by Starmax AC sprinter Borg is all the more impressive considering that she is still 16.
