Driving an SUV is very much the ultimate trend today. But, then, when you get to drive a classy set of wheels that really give you pleasure every kilometre you drive, it must be heaven.

This is very much the case with the Kyron: SsangYong have produced a vehicle that combines elegance and comfort with a sporty design.

A distinctive exterior (4,660 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,740 mm high) sets the Kyron apart from other SUVs. The front is characterised by a wide bonnet, with the distinctive triple-line radiator grille below it; while the side view is dynamic.

The rear end also has that characteristic look. The clear headlamps with the amber indicator lights give the car an even sportier look.

The interior is elegant, comfortable and spacious. The centre fascia is oriented towards the driver's seat. Hence, the person sitting there has a good overall view; plus the controls are well within your fingertips.

The air-conditioning works well; plus, the sound system is a dream. The car has driver and passenger airbags for added safety, and adding to the solid built of the cabin the car is as safe as home.

The driving position is very commanding and the view of what is happening around you is clear for the full 180°. The cabin is full of comfort and the switches have been innovatively organised in circles for easy location and maximum use.

The steering wheel feels very comfortable and handles well, and the gear change is smooth with a soft clutch and the lever falls right next to your left hand.

The drive is delivered by a 1,998 cc engine with 104kw at 4,000 rpm, giving a maximum speed of 167 km/h. The gross vehicle weight is 2,530 kg.

This Mercedes-Benz engine is a real treat to drive. When driving the car gives you the feeling that you can very much go anywhere.

The Kyron is a big vehicle but the driver forgets the size of the SUV because it is so easy to handle. The steering is reactive and the acceleration is rapid and steady.

When it comes to stopping, the breaks work most effectively. The ABS, and ventilated disc brakes on the front and back, work very efficiently.

As for the powertrains, the Kyron comes in 2.7-litre and 3.2-litre petrol All Wheel Drive, meaning that the AWD is employed full-time, while the 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre engines come with part-time AWD. So with these versions one would need to activate the AWD by a press of a button.

The SsangYong All Wheel Drive system powers all the wheels all the time in a proportion of 40 per cent to the front and 60 per cent to the rear. It works with the four-channel electronic stability programme.

As for the part-time AWD, the system needs to be engaged when the road is unpaved, hence giving more stability when using the high gear mode. The low gear mode is for maximum power at low speed on rugged off-road terrain.

As for boot space, the car provides ample loading capacity. So it really makes a perfect family car. Adding to this class act, the Kyron comes with alloys wheels, giving the exterior look a touch of added class and sport.

This car is such value for money that one really has to see it to believe it.

One final feature: the car comes with a three-year manufacturer's warranty, which gives piece of mind to whoever trusts his family's safety in SsangYong.
