The Royal Musical Association Research Students' Conference 2007, which was held between January 3 and 6 at the Department of Music at Bristol's University, was attended by several young international composers, among them Mariella Cassar from Victoria, Gozo.
Only five compositions out of hundreds of works were chosen, including Ms Cassar's.
She presented a piece entitled Silence of the Soul. The introduction conveys a sense of reflection, a spatial and sonorous feeling. The soul seems to be lost and confused, running around for answers.
During the allegro sections, the soul seems reluctant to admit defeat. The adagio section gives a moment of relaxation where the soul seems to let go, yet still not content. The changes in tempi and dynamics give reason to the title. The piece ends with a lento misterioso giving the notion that the soul has been left without an answer.
I hope that Ms Cassar does not remain silent and gives us more of her talent. Keep it up!
