Persian cat owners in Malta tended not to groom their pets often enough and when they did it was not done properly, an Italian groomer has observed.

In Malta to address a seminar prior to tomorrow's cat show at the Coastline Hotel, Salina, Elenora Rincari was advising people how best to groom their pet before any show.

Ms Rincari, who has a cattery of Persians in Italy, came to Malta on the invitation of Micabliss Persians. She is a firm believer that a brush should never be used, except when the cat has just been washed. For everyday brushing, a wide-toothed, pointed comb should be used to keep the fur free of knots.

A Persian cat's front nails should also be trimmed every three weeks, while a bath was recommended once a month. Ultra type Persians (those with an especially flat face) also needed special care when it came to cleaning their eyes.

Ms Rincari recommended that a damp cloth should be used to gently wipe their eyes every day, while once a week their eyes should be flushed of any debris with a few drops of Optrex.

Ms Rincari was joined at the seminar by two Italian pet nutritionists, who spoke about the emergence of organic, fresh food for cats on the local market.

Tomorrow's cat show, organised by the Malta Feline Guardians Club, will see 40 cats from kittens, to Persians and domestic cats meowing for attention.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the show will run until 5 p.m. TV personality Moira Delia will be present and will give out an award to the best cat, in her opinion.

People visiting the show will automatically be in with a chance to win several prizes, including weekend breaks, gift vouchers for pet food, and several dinners in different establishments.

A carnival costume competition for all the children will be held during the show, starting at about 3 p.m.

During the show the club will also open applications for the next International Cat Show to be held at the Westin Dragonara Resort, St Julians, from March 24-25.
