The Specialists Accreditation Committee (SAC), the body that advises the government on all postgraduate medical training issues, has approved the Specialist Training Programme for trainee family doctors, presented by the Malta College of Family Doctors.
SAC said the path was now set for the start of formal specialist training early this year.
Family medicine (general practice) became a speciality in Malta in November 2003 and is at par with all the other specialities.
The government is bound by EU directives to set up a training scheme for new family doctors who wish to work in the national primary health care service.
Completion of the training will allow successful trainees to become specialists in family medicine with an international certificate issued by the SAC and will allow full membership status with the College.
Last year the College awarded the certificate to 230 of its members that have become specialists in family medicine on the basis of past experience and training.
The College is represented on the SAC and is responsible for advising the committee on family medicine.
