American Shannon Briggs has cancelled his World Boxing Organisation heavyweight title defence against Russia's Sultan Ibragimov on March 10 because of pneumonia, a spokesman for Madison Square Garden said yesterday.

Briggs, 35, who has battled asthma throughout his career, is likely to be sidelined for at least three months.

He was due to defend the WBO title he claimed from Sergei Liakhovich of Belarus last November in Phoenix.
