Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair is recruiting several hundred people from 19 bases around Europe - including Malta - to beef up its 3,500-strong cabin crew.

Ryanair has opened a call for applications here following a large number of inquiries for job vacancies, according to the airline.

An advert in The Times said Ryanair representatives were at the Employment and Training Corporation in Hal Far for a recruitment day yesterday.

Apart from the usual criteria that makes people eligible to apply - such as age, height, an intermediate level in English and no criminal record - candidates should be "able to swim".

When asked, the airline's spokesman offered no explanation for this particular requirement.
