Army personnel who have completed 25 years of service and those aged 53 and over were recently briefed on their pension rights and employment prospects.

The army sought the services of the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) to brief the soldiers.

Armed Forces of Malta Commander Brigadier Carmel Vassallo said the army is sensitive to the fact that its soldiers might not be ready or prepared to retire after their 25 years of service and before they reach the normal pensionable age.

The ETC Over 40s Programme Coordinator, Victor Mifsud, emphasised the qualities that employers look for in potential employees such as maturity and discipline.

The ETC will soon launch its annual campaign targeting the over 40s, based on the importance of lifelong learning and training to improve the employability of people in this age group.

The corporation is currently offering over 80 training programmes free of charge for people registering for work. It will also be launching several employment schemes backed by funds from the European Social Fund.
