I refer to Carmel Attard's letter under the heading Residents' Plea Over Pollution (February 12) and wish to draw the attention of all concerned, especially residents of Censu Busuttil Street, that the Iklin local council has had several meetings in the past with the Malta Transport Authority about the acute traffic problems existing in Iklin.

This is attributed to the heavy flow of traffic which makes use of our internal roads, Guze Pesci, Pietru Pawl Saydon, Censu Busuttil and Guzé Galea, coming from the direction of the Birkirkara bypass. To avoid the Lija roundabout they use these internal roads. Suffice to say that last May the council carried out a traffic impact assessement for a whole week which resulted in 25,163 vehicles passing through the abovementioned roads.

Last November, during a meeting at the offices of the Malta Transport Authority, we put forward our suggestions and a plan to divert traffic from the centre of Iklin, substantiated with statistical figures as mentioned above.

Our plan was accepted "in principal" which had to be followed by a site visit by the ADT representatives from the Roads Directorate.

However, after several reminders, e-mails and telephone calls, we still have not received a communication from the competent authority about our plan of action.

This is eagerly awaited by the council as we fell that we have finally found a solution for the benefit of our residents to minimize pollution and traffic flow.
