Hilton is considering further expansion into Malta by introducing another of its nine brands, the hotel chain's president for Europe and Africa has said.

Wolfgang Neumann was in Malta last week to crown Hilton Malta as the region's energy champion after coming first in an inter-hotel campaign to reduce energy use and improve the environment.

Speaking to The Times Business after a press conference Mr Neumann described the local hotel as "fantastic" and a market leader.

The hotel is currently being extended, with a new wing featuring 113 rooms and nine suites being built seaward of the tower, raising the total number of rooms to 407 by April 2008.

The project also involves a new beach club, which will open this summer, and soft refurbishment of 79 rooms including enhanced services and new TV/internet systems.

"As great as the results are, we are not standing still, we want to do better. We have a fantastic relationship with hotel owner George Fenech and we are looking at various opportunities to expand what is already a very profitable package," Mr Neumann said.

He confirmed that expansion through the introduction of other brands was under consideration, ensuring that the Hilton would not be represented only in the top tier hotel category.

"Malta is an island whose tourism lends itself to other sectors of the market for which the Hilton has brands, such as DoubleTree by Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn which have definite potential in Malta" he said.

He said he was hopeful an announcement would be made within a few months.
