The Lufthansa Cargo Centre at Frankfurt Airport posted a new transhipment record in the 2006 business year having handled shipments totalling 1.58 million tonnes, an increase of 4.5 per cent over 2005.

A total of about 2.1 million individual shipments passed through the center in the 12-month term. They were transported into and out of Frankfurt Airport to consignees on aircraft operated by Lufthansa Cargo and its partners, in the belly holds of Lufthansa passenger aircraft and within Europe also by trucking services.

Lufthansa Cargo Centre manager Hjoerdis Stahl: "The airfreight business is and remains a strong growth industry. Lufthansa Cargo is ideally positioned in Frankfurt to continue playing a leading role in future in the airfreighting business, worldwide.

Lufthansa Cargo handled about two-thirds of the total tonnage transhipped through Frankfurt Airport in 2006.

The centre was opened in 1982 and is one of the world's biggest airfreight transhipment centres. About 80 per cent of all shipments airfreighted by Lufthansa Cargo around the globe pass through this hub. A staff of more than 2,000 employees work round-the-clock, ensuring that airfreight shipments arrive at consignees reliably and on time.
