The Malta Institute of Management has announced the launch of a new Diploma in VAT Compliance.

The institute explained that, although VAT has been in Malta since 1995, there have been substantial changes during the years particularly more so when Malta joined the EU and consequently adopted the 6th Directive.

Through its market training needs analysis, the MIM observed that there is a huge need for training in this sector. VAT is a very technical subject which sometimes gets very complicated to understand. It was also clear that there is a lack of VAT planning in Malta with many tending to concentrate on direct tax planning but failing to take into account VAT issues. Furthermore, sophisticated VAT planning can be used to attract investment into Malta.

The Diploma in VAT Compliance course, which will be run jointly by the Malta Institute of Management and the Institute of Indirect Taxation will cover VAT legislation in detail, with 30 contact hours of intensive analysis and study of Maltese legislation. Students shall also be exposed to more fine-tuned systems of VAT such as the UK. The diploma is aimed at persons that regularly interact with VAT issues and that compile VAT returns.
