A Tunisian national was yesterday jailed for a year for handling a stolen handbag and giving false information to the police.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli heard Tarek Ayari, 31, of St Paul's Bay admit to handling a stolen bag which belonged to an elderly English woman who had been robbed. The handbag contained cash and a mobile phone.

The woman had been robbed on November 27, 2005, in Qawra.

Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi prosecuted. Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for Mr Ayari.
