It was indeed a great pleasure to read Mr Mario Calleja's letter with a brief history of the formation of a Lyceum Old Boys' Association (The Sunday Times, February 4).

With the founding of ALPS in 1994, Dr Guido Saliba's dream created awareness among Lyceum past students to form a strong association. With pleasure, I can divulge that membership has to date exceeded 610.

And, there are even more Lyceum colleagues who have shown interest in joining such a dynamic association.

Our aim is to get as many Lyceum Past Students together and to organise worthy philanthropic events or projects that would benefit others in Malta and even abroad.

To mention one example: in 2006, on the initiative of one of the council members, Dr Nazzareno Azzopardi, we managed to export to the missions in Arequipa, Peru, thousands of exercise books and pencils under a project that was code named Pitazz u Lapez.

From many schools around Malta, we managed to instill in the students a sense of sharing and they all contributed to turn our charitable project into a resounding success.

This year, while collaborating with the Maratona bir-Roti committee of the Lyceum in Hamrun, we are helping to raise the largest amount of funds that will be channelled to Dar tal-Providenza, Siggiewi. The event will take place on March 23-25. The public is encouraged to attend and to help in such a noble cause.

Every year ALPS organises a good number of cultural and social events. On all occasions, a considerable number of members and their friends attend. They are impressed with all that we manage to prepare and present to them. That includes the Pwales Chapel that we have managed to restore and where we organise the feast of Sant'Anna in July each year.

ALPS is led by a president and a 12-member council of administration. We are always on the look out for more interesting events to organise to make our members happy and to reminisce those years gone by but never forgotten from our Lyceum days. Our motto as always: Nil Mediocriter.
