The Paramount Kiosk in the centre of Antoine de Paule Square, in Paola, was gutted by fire on Thursday night in what the police are treating as an accident.

It is understood that the blaze started at about 7.30 p.m. when the oil in a chip pan caught fire, which quickly spread inside the kiosk.

Firefighters from the Civil Protection Department were called to the scene.

None of the employees was hurt but a fireman had to be treated for slight injuries to his hand caused by broken glass.

The kiosk has been occupying that central location for many years and is considered as something of a landmark.

The police are investigating.
