Now that the European Court of Justice has ruled that Poland cannot tax second-hand cars (imported) from other EU countries "more onerously than those already registered in Poland, and there has also been considerable comment on this case in recent days through these columns, with all commentators agreeing that this ruling will eventually have to be observed here...
Will this government now accept and apply this "fairness" principle here in Malta and rescind the present system that is currently applied by the ADT to EU citizens who bring a beloved second-hand car in with them, and in the main, now reside permanently in Malta?
My own 17-year-old BMW with a Malta Customs Valuation of Lm1,000 to Lm1,200 would face an additional (a second registration fee since it has already been registered at point of purchase) charge of Lm11,000 plus VAT, i.e. Lm12,980 just to become re-registered locally and be used occasionally here. Let's be fair...
