Tecom Investments's Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech) has launched the first phase of a $400 million biotechnology industry cluster.
DuBiotech said that all of its buildings will meet standards of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the leading rating system for "green buildings".
The complex, including the headquarters, laboratory buildings and pre-built units will be constructed according to international guidelines of sustainable development for high efficient in the use of energy, water, and materials and a high-quality indoor environment. The LEED certification process will involve evaluation of diverse criteria including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable sites, materials and resources. Once qualified, DuBiotech's 600,000 square feet headquarter complex will be one of the largest "green buildings in the world.
DuBiotech will create, develop and advance research and development in the Middle East region. It will foster biotechnology education, training and sustain industry support.
The facilities will be built in phases and upon completion will cover over 10 million square metres of built-up area. They will be located in the proximity of other pioneering developments such as Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, Knowledge Village and Academic City, as well as exclusive residential and leisure facilities.
Companies operating from DuBiotech enjoy the commercial benefits of free-zone status, including 100 per cent business ownership, repatriation of profits and tax-free operations.
In line with its goal to promote life science research, DuBiotech recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Sharjah, College of Health Sciences, and the UAE University to partner in promoting life science research and education in the UAE.
Amgen, the largest biotech company in the world, also set up its regional hub at DuBiotech.
