Malta has double taxation relief agreements with 44 countries while agreements with Switzerland and the US are limited to profits from the operation of international air and maritime traffic. There are also agreements with five countries that have been signed but are awaiting ratification, as well as four others that have been technically concluded but not yet signed, the Prime Minister told Joseph Cassar (PN) in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

Talks on double taxation agreements are currently underway with three countries.

Dr Gonzi said the agreements in force are with South Africa, Albania, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Canada, Croatia, India, Italy, Iceland, Kuwait, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Norway, Holland, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Syria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, the United Kingdom and Hungary.

The agreements limited to air and maritime traffic are with Switzerland and the US.

The agreements that have been signed but not ratified are with the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Morocco, Russia and Singapore.

Treaties with Jordan, Ireland, Thailand and Ukraine have been technically concluded but have not yet been signed.

The three countries with which negotiations are underway are Turkey and Switzerland, while talks have been started with the US.
