I refer to the letter Car Registration Disk (January 29) by Vincent Chetcuti, which was about someone who got booked by a warden for fixing his Car Registration Disk on the left hand side of the windscreen - something he has been doing for the last 20 years.

Whilst sympathising with the warden's victim over this senseless behaviour, I agree with Mr Chetcuti he writes that people sometimes take the easiest way out and pay the fine without contestation, even though they feel they have done nothing wrong. It is very true that such people are sending the wrong message.

I am not against the warden system, I realise and understand that they have brought significant law and order on our roads. What I am against is when they abuse of their power or speak to people arrogantly. I say this from experience. I was once booked four times in the span of 30 days; but since I knew only too well that I was not in any way to blame on all four occasions, I contested all of them and was cleared of all charges.

A few days ago, a friend of mine got booked because his car was parked in Mdina Square - something he does pretty often and for which he has the council's blessing which comes in the form of a ticket to be fixed on the inside of the car's windscreen every time he enters Mdina. The funny thing is (although it was not funny for him at all), at the time he was booked, the permit was fixed to the windscreen for all to see. I, together with another two persons who were going to be given a lift by this friend, saw the ticket. The poor warden (it seems), missed it. Maybe his vision was blurred by the sun's rays!

My friend told me he was going to contest the booking and I offered to vouch for him in case it was necessary.

Such wrongdoings on the part of some wardens irritate people and should be stopped once and for all, if wardens want to gain the people's respect and esteem.
