This January was the warmest on record, with temperatures reaching an average of 17.5°C during the day, 2.5°C above the average for the month.

The Meteorological Office, which started keeping records in 1923, said these temperatures were more typical of the Easter period than this time of the year.

The warmest day was January 20, with a high of 21.9°C, just under the warmest January day ever recorded, - January 29, 1939, at 22.8°C.

With an average temperature of 11.5°C, January nights were warmer than the average by 1.8°C. The warmest night was that of January 22/23 when the mercury reached its lowest at 15.9°C.

The coolest night last month was that of the January 25/26 when the thermometer recorded 8.9°C.

The month was the second driest January over the past 84 years.

It was also sunnier than average with a mean of six hours and 12 minutes of bright sunshine a day, said the Met. Office, which forms part of Malta International Airport.
