Enemalta Corporation said yesterday it was fully confident it could meet the foreseeable electricity demand.

Referring to comments in Parliament by Labour MP Joe Mizzi that the power stations might not be able to meet demand because of faults in two turbines, the corporation said it had an available capacity of 440MW, expected to increase to 490MW within two weeks. This was because the major overhaul of one of the gas turbines will be completed soon.

The corporation said the peak load last winter was 383MW, and in summer 404MW. This implied that Enemalta had over 10 per cent reserve capacity, which was more than ample in the circumstances.
