One of the arguments so often brought up by anti-divorce campaigners is the one about divorce being harmful to children. Superficially, this seems a strong enough case, especially if backed by quotes from countries where divorce is available; which of course means all the countries in the world bar two.

But the truth is that marital strife and the eventual separation of their parents is what really harms children, not divorce. We don't have divorce here in Malta, yet so many children are currently going through the pain of seeing their parents' relationship fall to pieces. We won't have divorce for quite some time in this country, but unfortunately this won't protect children from going through this same trauma in the years to come.

The truth is that we don't have divorce in Malta not because it is harmful to children or to society, but because only a relatively small number of people really need it. And most of our politicians are more interested in winning elections than in doing what's right. They don't care that so many couples and families are being so blatantly discriminated against.

But that's hardly surprising, is it? After all, the dominant value that our society is built upon is selfishness.
