Determination driving Gilford towards national record
The will and determination of some Maltese athletes many times allow them to overcome most shortcomings. Yet, very little can be done about the lack of a proper indoor track. The only solution for those wanting to excel in this speciality is to travel abroad where such facilities exist.
Perhaps, that's what has motivated sprinter Darren Gilford to go to England on a 12-day trip.
"There's no other way but to travel overseas to train indoors," he said.
"I will be training in a high performance stadium along with England's best athletes. Unfortunately, it will only last 12 days. It's not enough for a proper training camp because it should be longer but that's all I can afford."
Finance is always an issue for top level athletes like Gilford.
"I do receive assistance but I'm not sponsored," he said. "I would like to encourage business people to help local athletes."
At least, during this trip he will be able to call on the experience of coach Jivko Jetchev who will be with him during this trip, something that 'makes a lot of a difference'.
Gilford said: "My stay in England includes two competitions and an indoor training camp. Having the coach around me makes me feel more confident, he's my mentor and I believe that it's the right way to do it."
In Birmingham the level of competition will be average, Gilford said when asked about the events he will be taking part.
"On the other hand, in Sheffield there will be the UK trials," he added, "so the best British athletes will be there. I'm honoured to have received an invitation to take part in this event.
"All I want is to beat the time of 6.76. That's what matters to me.
"Obviously, having such strong sprinters in the same race will help me achieve one of my goals."
These goals also include getting to the European Championships.
"I'm looking to break my national record," Gilford said.
"Also, in March there will be the European Indoors which will be held in Birmingham. Hopefully, I will manage to qualify for the Europeans as well."
Away from the track, Gilford has another important objective.
"I am also on the way to publishing my website www.darrengilford.com," he said.
"It will cover past and present experiences through my athletics career. The site will also feature latest news, photos, articles and videos. It should be online in the coming weeks."
