The Malta Union of Teachers has welcomed the Industrial Tribunal's judgment making a distinction between University of Malta academic staff and Junior College teachers.

The decision strengthens the position that the MUT has taken with respect to academic staff working in the different sections of University, the union said.

The Industrial Tribunal has said that there are important differences between academic members of staff at the University attached to faculties, institutes or centres and teachers attached to the Junior College and that it would be beneficial for academic members of staff at the University to have different working conditions than those at the Junior College.

The tribunal decided that with immediate effect UMASA (University of Malta Academic Staff Association) should take part in all industrial discussions of whatever nature that are held between the university and the MUT.

The MUT said that this achievement would not have been possible had it not enjoyed the full trust of its members.

It was totally committed to ensuring that the academic staff have the full resources to accomplish their intellectual goals and are well compensated.

It said it looked forward to collaborating with UMASA.
