Senseless Maltese - what the experts should fix (2)

I was really amused to read the report "Experts appointed to study Maltese language variations" (The Sunday Times, January 21).

From my worldwide travels to over 90 countries since 1967, it has been my experience that foreign words entering a language are either spelt the same or simply written phonetically. I would have opted for leaving them written in the same way so that there would be something which would remind those who study the Maltese language that such words were originally foreign.

Of course, I found it somewhat curious that no one seems to have proposed the eventual coining of a real Maltese word or expression. For example, "football" could be as well translated as "ballun tas-saqajn", "budget" could be translated as "pjan tan-nefqa tal-flus" and so on.

I am not asking the committee of experts to follow my proposal. But it would simply be appropriate to consider every single solution to the question of foreign words that entered the Maltese language and how to deal with them.
