We have seen the birth of much needed and long-awaited cycle lanes. Or have we?

The 'cycle lanes' created start and end abruptly, often starting from nowhere and leading to nowhere. They pass through pedestrian areas and roads, with no indications on who takes priority.

Being at the roadside, they are quite often riddled with potholes; if driving through potholes is uncomfortable with a car, it is a hundred times worse on a bike.

To add insult to injury, some 'cycle lanes' are paved with concrete blocks, making the ground far from smooth and highly uncomfortable to cycle over.

Our implementation of cycle lanes leaves everything to be desired. Cycle lanes should bring safety to cyclists and cars alike, but they bring none.

The situation has become ridiculous.

In the meantime, Maltese cyclists dream of cycle lanes, but see them not.
