Those of us who are in favour of capital punishment contend that the death penalty is more humane and less cruel than life imprisonment. It is disturbing enough to see birds enclosed in small cages for life, so to think of imprisoning humans in cells for a lifetime is even more disgusting.
The idea that the death penalty might help to prevent any future murder cases is true enough but the argument that sometimes the condemned is wrongly convicted to die is not very convincing.
A miscarriage of justice can occur in any form of punishment, including, of course, life imprisonment. The fault has to be sought in the legal system itself and not in the sentence imposed.
It is then more logical and more satisfactory to kill a murderer not only because the 'punishment should always fit the crime', but also because the convicted person will always continue to search for the ways that provide for his escape.
Sure enough, society must not even consider to 'breed criminals in cages'. It is much more civilised to kill them in the most humane manner at its disposal.
As a practising Catholic I sincerely hope that my views on the death penalty do not in any way contravene any doctrine of my religion.
