Many Maltese are against the introduction of divorce for two reasons. The first being that it does not apply to them because they are in a healthy marriage, and the second is their religious belief.

The first reason is very typical of us Maltese, that is, if it is not a problem for me than I don't care about the rest. This sad mentality is very evident in our everyday life. I know of people who were staunchly against divorce when they were in a healthy marriage, but changed their opinion to pro divorce when their perfect marriage broke down.

But to justify our first opinion we need a good reason, and a religious reason is always a valid one. If we are banning divorce because of our religious convictions, then we might as well ban the importation of condoms because they too go against our Catholic beliefs. Maybe we should also exile priests who leave the priesthood and marry.

We should not impose our religious convictions and ideals on everyone; after all we live in a democratic country which has freedom of religion and worship. So it is very strange that our beloved politicians, who always seem to boast about our human rights achievements, keep denying us the choice of divorce.
