Two women have been put on probation for stealing debit cards and making use of them.

In one case, Rita Vella, 48, of Floriana was put on probation for three years when she pleaded guilty to stealing Mary Briffa's Bank of Valletta Cashlink and defrauding her of over Lm100 in July last year.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera noted that Ms Vella was a first-time offender and had cooperated with the police.

In a separate case before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli, Michelle Frances Azzopardi, 29, was put on probation for two years.

She pleaded guilty to stealing Maria Theresa Buttigieg's HSBC Quikcash and making use of it in December 2004.

The magistrate noted that Ms Azzopardi had cooperated with the police and refunded all the money.
